Lo Siento, return of the comfort cowboy.

Good news kids, after a long hiatus from blogging (Christmas and what not) Johnny Uruguay is back on track.

Recent developments have made walking to Uruguay obsolete. Tickets have been purchased through the miracle of adhering to the no plan, plan. A fellow adventurer known as Johnny Dangerous has ponied up the ticket money via credit card, details to be sorted at a later date.

Walking to Uruguay was a last resort and perhaps far more glamorous but leaving on a jet plane to cosmopolitan Buenos Aries on January 15th makes this frontier loving cowboy a little more comfortable. With ticket in hand, non-refundable of course, the nervousness is setting in. The herculean task of arriving underfunded in South America with a desire to start from scratch is beginning to sink in. Fear not I am still on track to depart but reality is taking a parting punch for old times sake.

No news from the CBC, but contact has been made through the power of the Internet with some expat groups and rugby clubs. Perhaps a business as a wine exporter or treasure seeker is in order, crazy fantasies or just crazy enough to work?

The madness spreads.

There is something innately appealing about packing in the known for the unknown, the certain for the uncertain, and the mundane for the sublime.

The aftershock of the announcement has reverberated through our small community of friends. The online poll has 100% of respondents in favour of the excursion but the greatest testament to the madness, its spreading. Johnny Uruguay has a traveling companion.

In other news we have an offer to drive to warmer climes because who wants to walk in January. Also a pitch is being prepared for the CBC, maybe we can get them to front ticket money so we can arrive in style.

The no plan, plan.

I have tried to follow the script, act fairly responsibly, and play by the major rules. Unfortunately my plan did not work. A combination of bad choices, bad luck, and bad timing have left me on the young side of middle age, broke with boxes of unopened registered letters from various governmental offices and collection agencies. Much like a labeled troubled child in primary school, getting out from under can be a suffocating challenge. Conventional wisdom has me staring down the barrel of five years of working to get to even. No thanks.

January 15th 2009 a journey begins. Johnny Uruguay is indeed Uruguay bound.

First an inventory must be taken.
Cash on hand - nil
Expected revenue - nil
Assets - nil
Moxy - in spades.

Somehow between now and my arbitrarily chosen start date, I must find a way to the land of milk and honey. Johnny Uruguay is heading home to a country he has googled a few times but never visited.
A number of questions might come to mind and I will be happy to address them but do not expect much in the way of intelligent answers because I am living with no plan save one, come January 15th this man is on his way south perhaps with nothing more than a tube of chapstick, passport, and my thumb.

So why not check in and see if I crash and burn, then the jokes on me but if I make it there will be a story or two perhaps even a hint of inspiration for those aching for change.
